Shadow Dancers Series
The Shadow Dancers Series are Debra Steidel's trademark work, the crane collection has evolved over the years as she continues to reinvent the original form and display.
The cranes are one of the few monogamous species in the wild. When the elegant birds find their life partner, they engage in a ritualistic mating dance. The captivating embrace gains significance from the subtle space between the enveloping necks, signifying the benevolence of their bond.
Dance as an artform
A unison dance is a ritual that a pair of cranes will perform together many times over the years, to strengthen their lifelong bond. In Japanese tradition, the beloved crane is said to live one thousand years and symbolize longevity.
"This series is not about a particular species. It was inspired by the silhouette, grace and the majestic form. Starting as a singular bird, I was fascinated with the reflective image as the bird wades into the water searching for fish. This eventually evolved into two birds shadowing each others' movements, into a mating dance."
